Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants In Auburn & Lewiston, ME

Great Falls Dental Associates provides our patients from the Greater Auburn & Lewiston area with dental sealant applications! Dental sealants are thin coatings that are applied to the surfaces of molars, helping keep food debris and bacteria out of the hard-to-reach pits and grooves and preventing tooth decay! We recommend that children have dental sealants applied as soon as their adult molars grow in, which usually happens around the age of six or seven. Having dental sealants applied to your children’s teeth as early as possible once their permanent teeth begin to grow in is an essential step for preventing cavities at the stage of their life when tooth decay is most common! If you have any questions about dental sealants or would like to schedule an appointment to have them applied at our office in Auburn, please contact us today by calling us at (207) 784-4222 or by filling out the contact form on our website!

How Are Dental Sealants Applied To Teeth?

At Great Falls Dental Associates in Auburn, ME, we make the dental sealant application process as quick and easy as can be! Once you’ve scheduled an appointment with us to have dental sealants applied, the first step in the process will be to thoroughly clean and dry each tooth that will be getting sealant. Typically, sealants are applied to the bicuspids and molars, as these teeth are the most susceptible to cavities and decay. Next, a solution will be applied to the teeth that will help the sealant make a tight bond, keeping out food particles and bacteria. The teeth will then be rinsed and dried again before the sealant is painted onto the surface of the teeth in a thin, unnoticeable layer. Finally, a curing light will be used to harden the sealants, making them strong and durable. The dental sealant application process is completely pain free and non-invasive, making it an excellent solution for decay and cavity prevention!

How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?

Dental sealants are designed to last for several years before they need to be reapplied! After you or your child has had dental sealants applied, your dentist will check to make sure they are in good condition at each of your semi-annual checkups. If your dentist discovers that sealants need to be replaced, they can typically reapply them right there and then quickly and easily! In order to have the best protection against tooth decay and cavities, we recommend that your child has their dental sealants replaced every few years while their adult teeth are still developing!
