What Are The Differences Between Complete, Partial, & Flipper Dentures?

Three of the most common types of dentures are complete dentures, partial dentures, and flipper dentures, which are sometimes referred to as “flipper teeth”. Complete dentures are used for patients that have all their teeth missing. These dentures sit on top of the gums and are typically removable, as opposed to other restorative dentistry procedures like dental implants that are permanently anchored into the jaw. Partial dentures are used for patients that still have some natural teeth remaining. These types of dentures consist of prosthetic teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base in order to replace one or more natural teeth that have been removed or have fallen out. Flipper dentures, also known as “flipper teeth” or “flippers”, are used to temporarily fill the gap left by a missing tooth (or teeth). Similar to a partial denture, flippers consist of a prosthetic tooth connected to a removable gum colored acrylic retainer that sits on the gums. While each of these three types of dentures are used in different circumstances, they’re all great options for restoring the look, feel, and function of your mouth and smile!

What To Expect When Getting Dentures

The first step in the denture process is to meet with a dentist for a consultation and discussion about which restorative dentistry procedure is right for you. Once it’s been determined by you and your dentist that dentures are the correct option, your dentist will recommend which type of denture is right for you. Next, the dentist will create molds of your teeth and gums so that they can create a custom-fit denture that will fit perfectly in your mouth and match the look of your natural teeth (for partials and flippers). At your next appointment, the dentist will work with you to ensure that your custom-made dentures fit perfectly to your gums, and make any adjustments if necessary. Finally, you’ll leave our dental office with a brand new set of dentures that will completely restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile without any discomfort or embarrassment!
